I've been toying around with the idea of getting a small boat for some river/stream adventures in northern Idaho. After looking through all the years/models, the one I like best is the 1998 Speedster with the twin 787 Rotax engines. Apparently these were also availabe in 1999, but I haven't been able to find any 99 models for sale. 

 

I'm a mechanical engineer with a focus on vehicles and engines, so I will likely be doing maintenance/repairs on my own. I don't have any need to make the boat go faster, but I may see if there are some interesting design alternatives to some of the common problems for these boats. It's been really helpful to read the forums and all the things that others have already done with these little boats.

The '98 Speedster with the twin 787s was a beast. It's a very fun boat if you are looking to just play on the water, but not much room for lounging aroud. The engine configuration is identical to my '98 Challenger.

I considered getting the twin 787 speedster as my first boat, but decided on the Challenger 1800 to have enough room for the family.
